The Olabisi Onabanjo University’s Admission List is out. But there’s a very bad news that comes with this good-news and this actually necessitate a very quick reaction from well thinking Nigerians, especially OOUITES.
It is very glaring but sad to discover that education in Nigeria, even in the public sector is meant only for the rich and wealthy, even in our world today.
I woke up to the good-news that the Olabisi Onabanjo University admission list had been released after some weeks of impatient waiting by the prospetors who applied for the School’s PUTME and wrote their exams some weeks ago.
“Yeah, it is a good news, not actually because I’m also seeking admission (as I just graduated from the same school last session), but because I know how happy I was the night I discovered I’d been admitted into the same university some years back” ~ said Abiodun, a former student of the school and a member of ANSA.
Hence, the sad news came with the ludicrous and exploitative recent hike in the Acceptance Fee of the newly admitted fresh students.
The new acceptance fee is 60,000 NAIRA?!
That’s so ridiculous and out of commonsense and totally devoid of empathy for the less-privileged.
The acceptance fee was an exploitative 40,000 Naira just four years ago when I gained admission into the school, while in the following year, the 2015/2016 session it increased to 50,000 Naira, then I expected the school management to increase the fee to either 55,000 or 60,000 Naira in the 2016/2017 session but they were cunningly-wise and they didn’t make any increment, instead they kept it at 50,000 Naira. Now it’s the 17/18 admission year and the school had exploitatively increased the admission fee to a ridiculous amount of 60,000 NAIRA!. How Sad?.
This is a school with inadequate Lecture Halls, Inadequate Lecturers (in term of numbers), Inadequate Transportation System, Very Poor Electric Power Supply in the school environment (as majority of the students live off-campus), Poor Health System with Inadequate Health Workers and Poor Public Relations from the Medical Personels as they do frustrate students almost every week due to their unprofessional negligence of students when they need them the most, This is coupled with a poor on-campus hostel whose owners (The School Management and Some other Private entities) find it hard to provide consistent water and electric supply for, and a total unavailability of Health Centre on Campus after the closure of the Main Health Center on campus which is for all students ( and this health center, just like all other civil departments close for daily work between 4:00pm and 6:00pm in the evening), thereby putting these students lives at high-risk. And for your information, these On-campus hostels is made compulsory for all students of some faculties, i.e Law, Engineering, Medicine and some others. and your admission would be forfeited if you were unfortunately unable to pay this hostel fee despite the fact that you already paid the ridiculous acceptance fee of 50,000 Naira which is now 60,000 NAIRA.
How Sad For My School, the Poor Educational System, My State of Origin( Ogun State) and Our Dear Country Nigeria?.
“The sad part now is that both the affected students and the Students Union Government wouldn’t do anything about this, just as they’ve been a docile educated and glorified groups of people over the previous years. Although I hope they change for good”, Abiodun quoted on his facebook page.
“OOU SUG is a big scam and the executives are clueless, illiberal and a disgrace to humanity.
“They claim they’ve not been inaugurated but parade themselves as executives, they find no excuse to discharge the student than to say the management claimed the students are not under their umbrella. Please whose umbrella are they, management or SUG?”. A student activist popularly known as K.S.A who is also a student of the school and a member of ANSA said amidst so many angry reactions by students on whatsapp groups and facebook due to the lackadaisical attitude of the Students Union Executives on the recent hike.
“As I am pretty pessimistic of the newly elected Students Union. But I hope they prove me wrong by doing what is ought to be done so that they don’t fail the students” he added.
History also has it that whenever acceptance fees are increased, it always comes with a HIKE IN SCHOOL FEE too.
for this reason, I’ll advice all OOUITES not to take this recent hike in admission fee with levity as AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL, Because these people who are inconsiderate to fresh students will never be considerate to you who are already their students and they will keep threatening you with the “DO YOU WANT TO LOSE YOUR STUDENTSHIP?” MANTRA which they know most students fear and dread and also get sheepy whenever they chant that ridiculous inhumane sentence which they love doing to cow students so that they could go on with their anti-students policies. he concluded.
In the same vein, there was a press release by a non-conformist group popularly known as ANSA.

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE INCESSANT HIKE IN ACCEPTANCE FEE FOR FRESH STUDENTS OF OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY
ANSA REJECTS THE DRACONIC HIKE IN ACCEPTANCE FEE
It has been brought to our notice that the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University has declared a full blown war on the children of the masses. This position has vindicated itself in the recent hike by 10% in the Acceptance Fee for Fresh Students of 2018/19 academics session for Olabisi Onabanjo University.
First, it must be noted that the idea of paying acceptance fee is a scam which is fraudulently aimed at extorting students who had to burn mid night candles to pass Utme and Post UTME.
It should also be recalled that for past academic sessions now, the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University has successfully increased acceptance fee by 10% every session and as thus are victorious in commercializing education which is only aimed at making the children of a common man uneducated as education is currently and obviously not affordable due to the economic crisis that the government brought Nigeria into.
The Ogun State Government and the University Authority must have definitely forgotten that for any developing Country, 26% should be budgeted to Education Sector but unfortunately the APC Led Government has just budgeted less than 7.1% to Education Sector.
Noteworthy is the fact that this Fee hike has no justifiable reason because there has been no development in the learning conditions of Students for a while now.
On this note, we condemn this fee hike and we reject it in its totality. The Authority of Olabisi Onabanjo University must not do things at the expense of the downtrodden masses.
On a final note, we charge the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Olabisi Onabanjo University Chapter, National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) OGUN JCC AXIS,National Association of University Students (NAUS), and the Students’ Union Government of Olabisi Onabanjo University to look critically into this issue as they also show solidarity to these Fresh Students.
For us at ANSA we are prepared to resist this draconic and anti-poor fee with all revolutionary methods within our disposal.

We gathered that, while so many ex-students, especially the affected freshmen and their parents and we’ll meaning Nigerians complain and show their disdain and grievances on various social media outlets concerning the recent hike in acceptance fee, we are yet to get any information on the reason for the sudden hike in fee from both by the school management and the Ogun state government.
